The West-Siberian Plain stretches from the Ural Mountains to the Mid-Siberian Highlands. The part shown in the picture is situated in the Hanty-Mansy Autonomous District. The major rivers that could be related to this plain are the Ob, Irtysh and Yenisei. A wide dark-blue strip is what the Ob appears in the image as and so do numerous swamps, which are characteristic of the West-Siberian plain. The swamps appear in the image as bright green spots with dark droplets of lakes and forest strips along valleys of brooks and small rivers. Forest massifs located in relatively elevated areas are highlighted in dark-green color.
The biggest forest massif is situated north-west from the Ob River bed. Pink spots within the forestland show consequences of forest fires and cuttings.
The alluvial plain of the Ob clearly stands out in the image stretching south-east from the main river bed as a wide stip. This is where the Verkhnee Dvuobye wetlands is located – the unique natural complex of bayous, small lakes and islands. This is the place of breeding grounds of many swimming bird species. This is also crossed by one of the major flyways during seasonal migrations.
