Image of the Week: Bodaybinsky District
The image of the north-eastern part of the Irkutsk region was received on September 13, 2017 from Pleiades-1B satellite. The territory of the Bodaibinsky district and Kropotkin settlement, next to which «Verninsky» Ore Mining and Processing Plant is located, can be seen on the image.
Gold mining is one of the oldest industrial branches in the Irkutsk region. Currently, the bulk of the region's gold is mined in the Bodaibinsky district.
Kropotkin settlement, founded in the XIX century, until 1930 was called Tikhono-Zadonsky, and after that it was renamed in honor of Peter Kropotkin — Russian revolutionary anarchist, geographer and geomorphologist, researcher of Eastern Siberia.
