TerraSAR-X delivers unique, novel quality SAR satellite image data with a resolution of up to 1 m. Any area of interest on the Earth could be reached at 95% of probability: it is common knowledge, that a radar mapping is both daylight and weather independent, i.e. the system can record data at night and through clouds or dense smoke cover. Furthermore, the system response time can be as short as only a few hours – near real-time data processing. That makes TerraSAR-X a relevant sensor to support sensitive decision-making in time-critical situations.
On March 1, 2007 a partner agreement was signed between the ScanEx R&D Center and the Infoterra GmbH, who holds the exclusive commercial exploitation rights for the radar satellite. Company Infoterra GmbH was founded in 2001 as part of the TerraSAR-X Program. The company belongs to the Infoterra Group, which comprises companies in France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
TerraSAR-X is the first German national satellite built within the frames of a public private partnership (PPP): The German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Europe's leading satellite system company, EADS Astrium, shared the cost of construction and deployment of the spacecraft. The satellite was successfully launched on June 15, 2007 and its data is already available for commercial users.
