On the image: Severo-Kurilsk town, Sakhalin region, Russia

The image of Paramushir and Shumshu Islands was received on January 23, 2017 from SPOT 6 satellite. Severo-Kurilsky Bay of the Sea of Okhotsk and located on its coast Severo-Kurilsk town, as well as Ebeco Volcano can be seen on the image.

Severo-Kurilsk is the only permanently inhabited locality on the Paramushir Island. Its population is about 2500 people. The area of the town is 6 sq. km. Economic activity here is mainly related to the extraction and processing of fish and seafood. There is a fishing port and four fish processing enterprises in Severo-Kurilsk.

The town is located in a zone of high seismic and volcanic hazard. Ebeco volcano (7 km west from Severo-Kurilsk) is one of the most active in the Kuril Islands.
