On the image: Vyborgsky District, Leningrad Region, Russia

The image received from SPOT 7 satellite on May 16, 2017 shows the city of Vyborg, located on the shore of the Vyborg Bay.

Vyborg was founded by the Swedes in 1293 at the mouth of one of the branches of the river Vuoksi. From the very beginning it developed as a trading settlement. Maritime trade flourished in the city.

The medieval part of Vyborg (Old Town) lies on a small peninsula, stretching from the southeast to the northwest between Vyborg Bay and the bay of Salakka-Lahti. Both gulfs are connected among themselves by the strait, in the middle of which there is a small Castle Island, on which Vyborg Castle is located.

At present the population of Vyborg is more than 78 thousand people. The city is a major economic, industrial and cultural center of the Leningrad region.
