The image received on November 2, 2018 from Pleiades-1A satellite shows Rostov-on-Don — the largest southern city of Russia, where more than 1.13 million people live. This is the tenth most populous city in Russia and the thirtieth in Europe.

The modern city originated on the site of a fortress, which was founded to protect the border territories of Russia from the south by order of Elizaveta Petrovna. City Day has been celebrated here since 1864.

Twice a year a solemn Arbor Day is held in Rostov-on-Don. The first mass planting of trees took place in 1910, and a century later this tradition was successfully revived.

The Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University, founded in 1927, is located in the northwestern part of Rostov-on-Don, in the valley of the River Temernik. This is the first botanical garden in the vast territory of the treeless zone of southern Russia. Over 6,500 species of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants grow there.
