On the image: Kizhi Island, Medvezhyegorsk District, Republic of Karelia, Russia
The image received on May 13, 2016 from the SPOT 6 satellite shows the northern part of Onega Lake and the islands adjacent to the Zaonezhsky Peninsula, including the famous Kizhi Island, on which the museum of the same name is located. It is one of the largest open air museums in Russia.

The main exposition sector of the museum-reserve is devoted to the traditional culture of the Russian Zaonezhye. The architectural ensemble consists of wooden churches and the bell tower of the 18th-19th centuries, which are surrounded by a traditional fence of graveyards.

The most famous building on the island is the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, built in 1714 and reaching a height of 37 m. Apart from the domes, it is built without nails, in the traditions of Russian carpentry.

In 1990, this territory was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
